5 causes of headaches in Ramadan and how to manage them

Headaches are one of the most frequently experienced health concerns in Ramadan.

Here are some of the most common causes of headaches and how to manage them:

  • Caffeine Withdrawal:
People who are used to a daily dose of caffeine often experience severe headaches while fasting. Gradually reduce your caffeine intake 2 - 3 weeks before Ramadan to prepare your body for the lack of caffeine and to prevent headaches.
  • Dehydration:
Low levels of body fluids is another common cause of headaches, particularly during the daytime hours of Ramadan. Drink plenty of fluids and consume fresh fruits and vegetables rich in dietary fibres as these store water and help replenish body fluids. Reduce excessive intake of caffeinated beverages and soft drinks as these have a diuretic effect, which can lead to dehydration.
  • Hypoglycemia:
Headaches can also be brought on by a decrease in blood glucose levels. Avoid overconsumption of sweets as they first cause a spike, followed by a drop in blood glucose levels, resulting in headaches.
  • Hunger:
Do not skip Suhoor as hunger during the day can cause headaches. Consume foods rich in complex carbohydrates and proteins at Suhoor to keep you energized throughout the day.
  • Changes in sleeping routine:
Lack of sleep and changes in the sleep routine during Ramadan can also lead to headaches. Get at least 6 to 8 hours of comfortable sleep each night to prevent headaches during the day.
