The school year and your child's health

back to school

The weak immune system in children exposes them to some health problems they may face during the school year.

Health problems such as:

  • Common Cold:

You can notice your child has caught a cold when he or she shows symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and coughing.
There is no need to worry, the child's health will improve in a few days; and it is worth noting that if the child is under six years of age, over-the-counter drugs should not be used, especially aspirin due to its serious side effects, instead you should consult a pediatrician.

  • Sore throat:

You can notice your child is suffering from a sore throat when he or she shows symptoms such as high body temperature, sore throat, and difficulty swallowing with enlarged and reddened tonsils. Most children develop this infection during the school year due to the frequent spread of infected droplets from an infected child to the rest of the children, through sneezing or coughing.

In this case, the pediatrician should be consulted to prescribe the appropriate antibiotic for this type of infection.

  • Gastroenteritis:

You can notice your child is suffering from gastroenteritis when he or she shows symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal pain. Children develop intestinal gastroenteritis because they lack or do not know the rules of personal hygiene such as washing hands after using the toilet and before eating or eating contaminated foods. You should consult a pediatrician, to diagnose the cause of the infection and thus prescribe the appropriate medications.

  • Flu:

Some may think that the flu and the common cold are the same, but the flu is recognized by high body temperature, fatigue, and body aches. Consult a pediatrician if the child has these symptoms, especially if he or she suffers from another health problem such as bronchial asthma.

As for children with chronic health problems - diagnosed before they apply to school - parents should inform the school of their condition, the medications the child needs, and how to deal with an emergency.

Some of the most common chronic health problems at this stage are:

  • Type I diabetes:

You can recognize your child has type I diabetes if you notice symptoms such as hunger or extreme thirst, bad breath, frequent urination, and unexplained weight loss. Parents should pay attention to these symptoms, consult a pediatrician to know how to help the child live with the disease, and inform the school of the child's condition and the prescribed doses of insulin, to avoid any complications during the school day.

  • Asthma and allergies:

Parents can recognize their child has asthma if they notice symptoms such as difficulty breathing, frequent coughing, wheezing sound when inhaling, sleep disturbance due to severe coughing attacks, and shortness of breath. The parents should take their child to see a pediatrician
and get a prescription to relieve the severity of the symptoms, and it is also necessary to inform the school of the child's condition and the medications prescribed

for them to ensure that he or she does not experience complications.

Always remind your kids about the importance of personal hygiene and washing or sanitizing their hands to eliminate infections. Also, remind them to drink plenty of water to avoid getting dehydrated. As well as advise them not to carry heavy school bags
or sit improperly in class to avoid developing spinal deformities.
